| Breast reduction is usually performed for physical
relief and cosmetic improvement. Very large, sagging breasts that
restrict activities and cause physical discomfort trouble most women
who choose to have breast reductions.
The surgery is designed for people who are seeking relief from
medical problems caused by the excessive weight of large breasts.
While different techniques exist for the breast reduction surgery,
the procedure still creates the same result: it removes fat, tissue
and skin from the breast to make them smaller, lighter and firmer.
Breast reduction can be performed at any age, but plastic surgeons
usually recommend waiting until breast development has stopped.
The best candidates are those that are also mature enough to have
realistic expectations about the results. It is generally not recommended
for woman who intend on breast-feeding. If this is a concern, make
sure to discuss this with your doctor during your consultation.
before your breast reduction surgery
As with any cosmetic procedure, you should come to the consultation
prepared to discuss your expectations for breast reduction. The
doctor will work with you to determine a solution that is appropriate
based on your needs and his expert opinion.
Additionally you should be prepared to discuss your family history
and any medications which you are currently on with the doctor.
The more he knows about your health, the better advice he can give
for your breast reduction surgery.
During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will examine your
breast and take measurements and photographs for reference before
and after the surgery. The doctor will discuss the different aspects
which affect the procedure-such as your age, the size and shape
of your breasts, and the condition of your skin.
Prior to the breast reduction surgery, the physician should provide
a list of guidelines for preparation for your breast reduction surgery.
Make sure to follow these guidelines and call the doctor if you
have any questions.
your breast reduction surgery
Techniques for breast reduction vary, but the most common procedure
involves an incision which circles the breast and extends downward
in an “anchor shape”. The surgeon will then remove the
breast tissue, fat, and skin necessary to reshape the breast. The
doctor will then bring the skin from both sides of the breast down
and around the areola, shaping the new contour of the breast. The
areola, which in large breasts usually has been stretched, may also
be reduced in size. In cases where the breasts are excessively larger,
the nipple and areola may need to be completey removed and regrafted
into a higher position.
after your breast reduction surgery
Your breast reduction surgeon will give you detailed instructions
for resuming your normal activities after the surgery. You can reduce
any post-operation risk of complication by closely following your
surgeon’s instructions. You may feel some pain for the first
couple of days-especially when you move around or cough-and some
discomfort for a week or more. Your surgeon will prescribe medication
to lessen the pain.
Immediately following the breast reduction surgery, you may feel
less sensation in the nipple and areola areas. The time required
for the sensation to return differs in each individual. Your breasts
may also require some time to assume a more natural shape. Incisions
will initially be red or pink in color.
It is important to realize, however, that the incision lines will
be permanently visible, more so in some individuals than others.
Scars around the areola, below it, and in the crease under the breast
are permanent, but can be easily concealed by clothing
As with any operation, there are risks associated with surgery
and specific complications associated with this procedure. Make
sure to discuss this with your physician and understand any issues.
